Chapter 6

When Megan reached her own apartment door she was out of breath from sprinting down one set of stairs and back up another. She turned the key in the lock, pushed the door open, and was greeted by the warm light of one small lamp in her living room. She slid her shoes off by the front door and hung her purse on the back of a chair. Walking down the hall she noticed that no other lights were on and assumed that Phillip had gone to sleep. That was unnerving to her. Did he really just fall asleep, like he’s not even worried about me? What if I had been kidnapped or stabbed in the street, just lying there waiting for my boyfriend to come search for me? I guess I’d be waiting a while.

Stepping into her room, she saw that she was right. He laid there, on his side and she watched his back move in sync with his breathing. She stood there and watched him until she had lost track of how long she had been there. Finally, she tiptoed over to the dresser and pulled out an old t-shirt. D’s scent stayed on her skin even after her clothes had been removed, and the new shirt was only a temporary cover. Careful not to wake Phillip up, she maneuvered herself under the covers and closed her eyes waiting for sleep to come.

She wasn’t sure what time she had actually fallen asleep, but when Phillip nudged her awake at eight the next morning she knew it had been late. It took her twenty minutes to actually open her eyes and it wasn’t until she was standing in the shower that she was able to form full sentences.

“Where were you last night? I called and texted you like a hundred times,” he pressured.

“I know, I’m sorry. I went over to D’s after work and we hung out for a little while, somehow I passed out on her couch. I guess I was a lot more tired than I thought I was.” She wrapped herself in a towel and began to towel dry her hair while he shaved in front of the mirror.

“Ah, well you should have let me know where you were. I was worried.”

“Yea, you looked worried…” she mumbled under her breath.

“What does that even mean?” he turned towards her.

“You were asleep when I got home Phillip, you must not have been that worried,” she stated matter-of-factly. She couldn’t even look him in the eyes. She knew that she was mad at herself for not being loyal to him, but she was mad at him too. How could he not notice that I’ve been drifting away, and spending all my time with somebody else? Like, he doesn’t even care and I’m so tired of trying to pretend like we’re happy.

“Seriously? I fell asleep waiting for you, what the hell did you expect?”

“Nothing, absolutely nothing!” Megan dropped her towels on the floor and stormed in to the bedroom, slamming the bathroom door behind her.
